The headline of Delhi being the most polluted capital city in 2023 wasn’t just another statistic for Enactus LSR. Sitting in the very heart of the nation, where AQI levels routinely cross 400 during stubble burning season, we knew we had to act. Project Vichar, Enactus LSR’s newest initiative, transforms agricultural waste into Biochar – a groundbreaking soil amendment, which addresses the dual crisis of air pollution and soil degradation. With over a year’s intensive research and development, this innovation is set to revolutionize Indian agriculture. Harnessing Biochar’s diverse range of applications, Project Vichar holds the potential to transform the lives of millions – from farmers to school children, asthma patients, and beyond. With strategic partnerships with organizations including Assomac Industries, Taco Bell, Edible Routes, and Viridian Accelerator Centre, we’re scaling this innovation with an aim to create a future of cleaner air, enhanced levels of education, and healthier communities!
Every year, stubble burning suffocates northern India during the months of November and December. Enactus LSR responded to this problem. After months of research and meetings with agritech experts we developed Biochar - which aims at transforming agriculture and fighting pollution!
Through rigorous pilot testing with Assomac Industries and Shri Ram Institute for Industrial Research, we validated our production model and successfully produced our inaugural batch of Biochar.
Testing our Biochar with Edible Routes, an organic farm in Chhatarpur, revealed remarkable results. Biochar enriched soil showed a 22% increase in water retention, resulting in >10% increase in crop yield while sequestering 2.62 Gt of CO2 annually.
Several companies recognized our product's potential in the Indian AgroTech industry. This recognition led us to partner with Viridian Accelerator and secure grants worth INR 20,000 from the Taco Bell Ambition Accelerator and INR 100,000 from C&S Electricals.
To provide our product with a true reflection of what we stand for we reconnected with our roots! Travelling through the lanes of Chandini Chowk and Chawri Bazaar we finalized an eco-friendly packaging material for our Biochar!
We introduced our Biochar to potential customers by visiting nurseries and organic farms across Delhi NCR. This led to orders from a variety of nurseries, including Greenways Nursery which has North India’s largest collection of plants!
